Depression is something that is very, very serious and can seriously mess you up emotionally and physically.  While there are many different medications that you can take for depression, I can promise you that natural remedies are going to be your best bet.  Not only are there a ton of different ones out there, but one could be sitting right on your tabletop.

Salt has been proven as a positive treatment for depression.  The reason is because salt actually triggers the mind to release a pleasant response, thus relieving any tension or depression that you might be having in your mind at that moment.

While most people say that too much salt is going to harm you, your body will actually crave salt if you do not eat it.


The Roots of a Depression

depressionDepression is still not completely understood, especially with the alteration in the brain chemistry resulting to it. But there are several identifiable triggers for depression.

First, we have stress. There are many possible causes of stress, which can cause or worsen depression.

Then we have trauma. Persons may suffer PTSD or Post – Traumatic Stress Disorder from intense physical or emotional trauma or abuse can lead to long periods of depression and other psychological difficulties.

Reduced sun exposure is said to play a role in depression. There were cases wherein people experience decreased mood during winter months.

Genetics can also be a factor in depression. But it doesn’t mean that you are vulnerable to the problem if you have one or more relatives who suffered the condition.

There are diseases that can cause depression, like hypothyroidism, which is caused by a deficiency of thyroid hormone.

Changes in body levels of some substances can precipitate depression. For instance, when the levels of estrogen in women and testosterone in men decline, they may experience mood swings and depression together with some physiological changes.

Depression Triggered by Less Sun for Individuals with SAD

Brighter lights at home may help enliven someone’s mood during the gloomy winter season.

A number of people with depression have reported to struggle more in managing their condition during winter. This fits the profile of people suffering from SAD or seasonal affective disorder which usually triggers depression during autumn and early winter. There have also been documented cases of individuals being more prone to depression during the summer months.

A study in the United States shows that around 4 to 6 percent of the population is suffering from seasonal affective disorder. A Cleveland health facility cites that around 10 to 20 percent of the population may struggle with more mild winter depression. SAD is a common occurrence with individuals between the ages of 20 and 40 years old.
